Morrison enters final round with one-shot lead
GLENVIEW, Ill. – Texas graduate Tommy Morrison carded six consecutive birdies on the back nine Saturday en route to a 7-under-par 64, building a one-shot lead over Dylan Menante after 54 holes of the Evans Scholars Invitational at The Glen Club.
The 21-year-old Morrison followed opening rounds of 65 and 63 with his 64, extending his streak to 14 consecutive rounds in the 60s in Korn Ferry Tour competition. He sits at 21-under par in just his fourth Korn Ferry Tour start.
The championship scoring record is 26-under par, set by Johnny Keefer last year.
"Just get a bunch of rest tonight and wake up tomorrow ready to go," Morrison said of his approach entering the final round. "There will be a bunch of guys up there vying for that top spot. Definitely can't fall off, got to stay on it."
Menante, a winner on the Korn Ferry Tour earlier this season, entered Saturday tied for the lead and posted a 5-under 66 after opening rounds of 63 and 64.
Three players are tied for third at 16 under, led by 19-year-old phenom Blades Brown, who surged 43 spots up the leaderboard with a tournament-low 10-under 61. Brown opened his round with five consecutive birdies, then closed in spectacular fashion with six straight birdies on Nos. 13-18.
“I can’t remember the last time I’ve done that,” Brown said of his birdie stretches. “Today was just one of those days where I was striping it exactly where I wanted to, the putts are going in and, of course, it’s easy on this course to make putts because the course is so good.”
Stuart Macdonald (65-67-65) and Noah Goodwin (69-62-66) also sit at 16-under par heading into Sunday’s final round.
Thomas Rosenmueller, the 2024 champion, is in a tie for sixth at 15-under par with Illinois graduate Jackson Buchanan and Ryo Ishikawa.
The fourth and final round of the Evans Scholars Invitational will begin Sunday, with tee times starting at 6:30 a.m. CT off No. 1.
